Measure the moving gap

On an older door, a sensor can be close enough to look right—and still be unreliable.

A Victorian panel door may sit flush at the latch side in spring, then bow just enough in winter for its top corner to pull away from the jamb. Add a thick stop moulding, a proud hinge, or carved trim, and the usual diagram of two neat rectangles facing each other stops applying.

A contact sensor works only when its magnet stays within the maker’s stated operating gap and alignment range. The parts may be close at one point yet offset vertically, shifted sideways, or separated as the door settles into its closed position. Measure the gap with the door fully latched—not merely pushed shut—and inspect it at the top, middle, and bottom. Then open and close the door repeatedly, watching whether the mounting surfaces move on different paths. Seasonal swelling, loose hinges, and a bowed slab can turn a borderline installation into intermittent “door open” alerts.

Map the door before marking

Identify the fixed and moving surfaces at the actual closed position.

Before peeling any adhesive or drilling a pilot hole, inspect the door while it is fully closed. Older openings often have a stop, trim build-up, or a slightly twisted slab that makes the apparent mounting spot unusable.

Establish the two mounting surfaces

A contact sensor has two parts: the sensor body stays on the fixed frame, while the magnet moves with the door. Trace the opening motion by hand and note:

  • Swing direction: An inward-swinging door may hide the useful frame face behind the stop; an outward-swinging door changes which face remains protected and accessible.
  • Hinge side: Keep both pieces on the latch-side area whenever possible. Hinges introduce more movement and leave little usable clearance.
  • Material: Solid wood accepts screws well; hollow metal, fiberglass, vinyl-clad frames, and decorative glass surrounds may require manufacturer-approved adhesive or a different sensor style.
  • Frame and stop profile: Identify the jamb face, door edge, and any raised stop. The stop is fixed, but it can prevent the magnet from sitting level with the sensor.
  • Storm or screen door: Close each door separately. Its hardware, sweep, or closer must not strike the sensor, magnet, or wiring.

Mark the intended pair with painter’s tape first. Then open and close the door several times, watching for rubbing, flexing, and any point where the two surfaces cease to face each other.

Start at the upper hinge-side corner

A protected, stable default for many older hinged doors.

For a conventional swinging door, the upper hinge-side corner is usually the first location worth testing. The frame is often solid there, the sensor sits away from hands and bags, and it is less exposed to kicks, sweeping water, and casual impact than a low-mounted unit.

This position also avoids much of the movement found at the latch edge. Older doors can bow, rack, or pull away from the frame slightly when closing; that flex is commonly greatest at the latch side. Near the top hinge, the door and frame generally hold a more repeatable relationship, helping the magnet return to the same point on every close.

Mount the sensor body on the fixed frame and the magnet on the moving door whenever the product design allows it. Before drilling or applying adhesive, close the door slowly several times and confirm that the two pieces remain aligned through the entire final inch of travel.

The default is not a universal rule. Some manufacturers require a particular side-by-side or end-to-end orientation, a marked sensing end, or a maximum separation that is tighter than the available reveal. Those instructions—and the stated maximum operating gap—always take priority over the hinge-side preference.

Check the gap at the worst point

Test with the door fully latched, not merely resting shut. If the gap exceeds the manufacturer’s limit anywhere in the final closing position, choose another location or use a sensor rated for a wider gap.

Build a flat mounting plane

Correct trim and profile conflicts before fastening either half.

Decorative casing can put the frame-side contact proud of the door face, while recessed panels leave the magnet too far back. A stepped jamb creates the opposite problem: the parts may sit close enough at one edge but diverge across their length. Neither condition is cured by tightening the screws or allowing the sensor to “reach” across the trim.

Close the door and hold a straightedge across the proposed locations. The two mounting faces must be solid, parallel, and within the sensor’s specified gap throughout the closing stroke. Check that the magnet passes the contact squarely rather than sweeping past it at an angle.

Use the correction that creates a continuous, rigid plane:

  • Fit manufacturer-approved spacers behind one component when only a small, uniform offset is needed.
  • Use a full-footprint, non-compressible shim or mounting block for a deeper recess. Fasten the block into sound jamb or door material, not ornamental casing alone.
  • On a raised or routed door panel, move to an adjacent flat stile if it preserves the approved sensor orientation.
  • Select a slim or surface-mount contact when a standard contact would require a long bridge over moulding or a stack of shims.

A mounting block should support the entire sensor base. Loose wedges, soft foam, and stacked scrap pieces can shift with seasonal wood movement, gradually turning a passing test into an intermittent alarm.

Do not bridge a trim gap

If either component overhangs casing or hangs in space, vibration can change alignment. Reposition it or use a sensor designed for that profile.

Test the gap under real conditions

A door that aligns on a calm, dry day may not align when it matters.

A mounting point is not proven by one neat closed-door measurement. Old timber can cup or twist with moisture, hinges can settle under the door’s weight, and wind pressure can move the leaf within the frame. The contact must remain within its rated separation throughout those normal changes.

Run a movement check

With the sensor temporarily held in place, open and close the door slowly through its full swing. Watch for the moving piece to pass too close to the fixed piece, scrape trim, or shift sideways as the door reaches the latch. Then test the door closed in the conditions most likely to enlarge the gap:

  • Pull the exterior handle gently outward, then push it inward.
  • Lift slightly at the handle to reveal hinge sag.
  • Check with the deadbolt thrown and unthrown, if it changes the door position.
  • Repeat after rain, high humidity, or a strong wind if those conditions commonly affect the door.

Measure the widest plausible closed-door gap, not merely the gap at rest. Confirm that it remains below the contact’s stated maximum and that the magnet still faces the sensor squarely.

If the margin is slim, do not rely on adhesive thickness or a perfect calm-day fit. Choose a wide-gap contact rated for the measured movement, or have a professional correct loose hinges, a warped door, or a distorted frame before installation.

Handle metal, multipoint, and storm-door conflicts

Protect the hardware while preserving a reliable closed signal.

First, identify which door the sensor is meant to supervise. In a storm-door assembly, that may be the exterior storm door, the primary entry door, or both—but each needs its own contact. A contact on the inner door cannot report that the storm door has been opened, and a contact on the storm door does not prove the main door is secured.

Steel doors and metal frames

Older steel doors often have thin skins, uneven paint buildup, and narrow magnetic clearances. Use the manufacturer-approved mounting method for metal; some contacts lose range or behave unpredictably when mounted directly on ferrous steel. Avoid drilling until the frame is checked for weatherstrip retainers, reinforcement, and concealed lock hardware. A shallow screw can still deform a thin steel skin or interfere with a reinforced jamb.

Lock and seal paths

Keep both sensor pieces clear of the strike, latch bolt, deadbolt throw, multipoint rods, and locking hooks. On multipoint doors, do not place a contact where rod movement, handle lift, or a locking cam can touch its wire or body. The sensor must also sit outside the compression path of bulb seals and sweep seals; a contact crushed by a seal may appear closed while the door is not fully latched.

Storm doors need extra clearance through their full swing. Check that the contact does not catch the closer arm, screen panel, seasonal glass insert, or the primary door when both doors move.

Do not share one contact across two doors

A sensor must track one moving leaf against one fixed surface. Two separately operable doors require separate sensors; otherwise an open outer door or unlatched inner door can go unreported.

Verify the installation

Prove the sensor works before relying on it

  • Dry-fit both pieces with removable tape

    Clean the selected surfaces, then hold or tape the sensor and magnet in the intended orientation. Close the door gently and confirm that the contact reports closed; open it 25–50 mm (1–2 in.) and confirm it changes to open. If the state is reversed or intermittent, reposition the pieces before exposing adhesive.

  • Check the full door cycle, not just the latch point

    Operate the door from fully open to firmly latched several times. Watch for a magnet that brushes trim, a sensor body fouled by weatherstrip, or a gap that widens when the door is lifted, pushed, or pulled. Test the lock, deadbolt, and storm door as well; a contact that works only with a lightly closed old door is not a reliable installation.

  • Bond the parts only after the closed state is repeatable

    Mark the dry-fit position, apply the supplied adhesive to clean, dry surfaces, and press each piece firmly for the manufacturer’s stated time. Do not shift either part during adhesive cure. Recheck the app after mounting, because a fraction of an inch can matter on a warped stile or uneven stop.

  • Test alerts where the system is normally used

    With the hub armed or notifications enabled, open and close the door from normal positions around the house. Confirm both the local state change and the time-stamped alert. Repeat after a few minutes and after the door has been locked, since hardware pressure can alter alignment.

  • Separate contact alignment faults from radio faults

    A sensor that shows the wrong state at the door has an alignment, gap, battery, or mounting-surface problem. A sensor that changes state locally but arrives late—or not at all—in the hub points to range, interference, or hub configuration; follow the system-specific checks for sensors that disconnect from the hub.

Re-test after the first cold, wet, or very humid day; seasonal movement often exposes marginal clearances.

Protect fragile surfaces and know when to stop

Choose the least invasive mount

On doors with checked paint, veneered jambs, or irreplaceable casing, begin with a reversible dry fit. Low-tack painter’s tape can hold the contact only long enough to confirm alignment; it is not a permanent mounting method. For a rental, choose one of the non-damaging systems for renters that supports the sensor’s weight and specified gap, and test removal on a hidden painted area first.

Avoid screwing into carved trim, thin stop molding, or a frame edge split around old fasteners. If a small flat spacer is necessary, use one rigid, finished pad on sound wood, attached within property rules. Do not stack foam tape, coins, or loose shims: they compress, shift, and make a successful test misleading.

Stop when trim moves under finger pressure, screw holes crumble, the latch needs lifting to close, or the door position changes visibly through its swing. Severe sag or loose trim needs correction by a carpenter, locksmith, or qualified security installer—not more improvised shims.

Final check

A reliable contact should leave no trace of guesswork

  • Choose a rigid, fixed mounting surface before choosing the most convenient one.
  • Treat the manufacturer’s gap limit as a hard pass/fail measurement, not an estimate.
  • Record the final placement and alert result for future troubleshooting.

The repeatable standard is simple: mount the sensor on a stable fixed surface, keep the magnet parallel and aligned, and maintain the approved closed-door gap. Then cycle the door through its full travel—including normal pressure at the latch—and confirm the app reports both open and closed states.

A clean alert is not enough if the installation damages old trim, finish, or hardware. Prefer reversible fixing, preserve clearance around moving parts, and correct loose wood or door sag before asking a contact sensor to compensate for it.
