A PS5 can look and play excellent on a 4K TV that lacks HDMI 2.1.
A retailer tag says “4K TV”, the console box mentions 4K and 120Hz, and a cable package promises “8K ultra high speed”—enough to make an otherwise sensible setup feel incomplete. In practice, PS5 games do not require HDMI 2.1 to deliver sharp 4K output, responsive controls, HDR, or convincing surround sound.
HDMI 2.1 matters chiefly when the display can accept 4K at 120Hz and support gaming features such as Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) or Auto Low Latency Mode. Many excellent PS5 titles run at 30fps or 60fps, and many players deliberately choose a 60fps performance mode even on a 120Hz-capable screen. A solid 4K HDMI 2.0 TV therefore remains a fully worthwhile PS5 display; it simply has a ceiling on a smaller set of high-frame-rate modes.

HDMI 2.1 is an upgrade, not a PS5 requirement
An “HDMI 2.1” badge does not guarantee full PS5 support. Verify that the chosen input accepts 4K at 120Hz, supports HDMI VRR, and can do so with HDR enabled. Some displays reserve those features for only one or two ports, while others advertise HDMI 2.1 despite limited bandwidth.
For a new purchase, a 120Hz HDMI 2.1 TV or monitor is the safer long-term choice. For an existing 4K/60Hz HDR display, there is no missing baseline PS5 experience.
What HDMI 2.1 actually changes
HDMI 2.1 is principally a higher-bandwidth connection standard, not an automatic picture-quality upgrade. A PS5 connected to a capable HDMI 2.0 display can still deliver sharp 4K output, HDR, and up to 60Hz. For most story-driven games and many quality-mode console titles, that is the normal target.
Why 120Hz demands more
Uncompressed 4K at 120Hz carries roughly twice the frame data of 4K at 60Hz. HDMI 2.0’s 18Gbps ceiling is built for 4K/60 HDR-class signals; full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 raises the link rate to 48Gbps, creating room for 4K/120 and related gaming features. Some displays use chroma subsampling or compression to work within lower limits, but these are implementation details—not evidence that every 4K/120 mode is available.
The HDMI version printed on a specification sheet is also insufficient. Under current HDMI labeling rules, a manufacturer may call an input “HDMI 2.1” while supporting only selected 2.1-era functions. Before buying or configuring a display, verify that the relevant input explicitly supports:
- 4K at 120Hz
- VRR, including HDMI Forum VRR where required
- ALLM for automatic Game Mode switching
- The desired HDR format at the intended refresh rate
A television with two 2.1-capable inputs may also restrict full bandwidth to one of them. The manual and the manufacturer’s supported-signal table are more reliable than the port label.
The PS5 features that matter on screen
120Hz output
A compatible display can refresh up to 120 times per second, making camera movement and controller response feel more immediate. In supported games, selecting a Performance or 120Hz mode often trades resolution, ray tracing, or visual detail for speed.
VRR
Variable Refresh Rate lets the display follow small changes in a game’s frame rate, reducing screen tearing and uneven motion. Its value is greatest when performance fluctuates rather than holding a clean 60 or 120fps.
ALLM
Auto Low Latency Mode tells a compatible TV to switch into its low-lag Game Mode when the PS5 becomes active. It is a convenience feature: it does not improve frame rate, resolution, or HDR.
eARC
Enhanced Audio Return Channel sends audio from the TV back to a receiver or soundbar, including higher-bandwidth formats where supported. It is separate from the PS5’s video connection and matters most in a gaming audio system setup.
A 120Hz TV does not make every PS5 title run at native 4K and 120fps. Many games use dynamic resolution, reduced effects, or a 40fps quality mode; others offer no 120Hz option at all.
Before buying around this feature, check the specific game’s PS5 modes and confirm that the chosen TV input accepts 4K/120 with VRR. For slower cinematic games, a well-tuned 4K/60 HDR presentation may be the more noticeable upgrade.
Match the display to the games played
A cinematic, 30fps adventure gains little from HDMI 2.1 unless its developer offers a convincing 40fps or 120Hz mode. For these games, OLED-level black depth, strong local dimming, accurate HDR tone mapping, and uniformity make a larger visible difference in dark scenes and sunsets than a 120Hz input ever will.
A 60fps action game is the middle ground. Many PS5 titles offer a Quality mode near 4K with ray tracing or denser effects, alongside a Performance mode targeting 60fps. That mode commonly lowers internal resolution, shadow quality, foliage density, or ray-tracing effects to reduce controller-to-screen delay and keep frame rate steadier. On a large 4K screen, the compromise can reveal why a lower-resolution image can look soft, especially from close seating distances.
Where HDMI 2.1 earns its place
Fast competitive games are the clearest case. A supported 120fps mode on a 120Hz display delivers each frame roughly every 8.3ms rather than 16.7ms at 60Hz. Combined with VRR, it can make aiming and camera movement feel materially cleaner when performance briefly dips.
Still, the port label is not a verdict. Before prioritising HDMI 2.1, check:
- Input lag at 60Hz and 120Hz: a responsive 60Hz game mode can beat a sluggish 120Hz TV.
- HDR performance: peak brightness, contrast, and local-dimming behaviour determine whether HDR has impact.
- Native panel quality: poor motion handling, grey blacks, or oversharpening remain visible at any bandwidth.
For story-led and 60fps console play, a well-reviewed 4K/60 HDR display is usually the smarter purchase. HDMI 2.1 becomes worth paying for when 120fps modes or PS5 VRR are regular priorities.
8K can wait
8K is not a sensible PS5 buying priority. Although the console carries an 8K capability claim, virtually no current PS5 games make a compelling case for an 8K display; demanding titles commonly use dynamic resolution even in their 4K modes. For practical 4K versus 8K console gaming, the extra pixels are far less visible than steadier motion.
A better budget split favors a 4K, 120Hz television with properly implemented HDMI 2.1. Check that the ports used for the PS5 support 4K at 120Hz, that VRR works with the console, and that the set does not disable local dimming or HDR quality in Game Mode. These features improve supported games now: 120fps modes reduce perceived blur and input lag, while VRR masks frame-rate dips. Strong HDR brightness and contrast remain more valuable than an 8K label.

The manual, manufacturer support page, or a reputable review should explicitly confirm 4K at 120Hz from a PS5. “120Hz panel” only describes the panel’s refresh capability, not what its HDMI inputs accept.

Enough full-bandwidth ports
Count every device before buying. Some sets provide only two 4K/120-capable inputs, and one may double as eARC; a soundbar can then leave a single high-bandwidth port for the PS5.

Use the supplied PS5 cable first
The console’s included cable is rated for the bandwidth needed for 4K/120Hz. “HDMI 2.1 cable” is not a meaningful guarantee: look for Ultra High Speed HDMI Certification, and replace damaged or unusually long runs before blaming the console.

Connect to a full-bandwidth display input
Many TVs reserve 4K/120Hz for one or two HDMI ports. Check the manual, avoid an older receiver or switch during testing, and connect the PS5 directly to that port.

Enable the TV’s enhanced-input mode
This setting is often called Enhanced Format, Input Signal Plus, Deep Color, or 4K/120. Turn it on for the selected port, then use the display’s Game Mode; a firmware update may also add VRR support.

Set PS5 video options to Automatic
Under Settings > Screen and Video, leave Resolution, 120 Hz Output, and VRR on Automatic. A game must also offer a 120fps mode, usually selected through its Performance mode or in-game graphics menu.

Read Video Output Information
With the game running, Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output Information shows the active resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and VRR status. This separates a missing setting from a game that is simply running at 60Hz.
Test the PS5 directly on the TV’s confirmed 4K/120Hz port with the supplied cable, then restart both devices to refresh the HDMI handshake. If 120Hz appears directly but not through an AVR, soundbar, switch, or capture device, that component is the bottleneck.

Does every PS5 game run at 120fps?
No. A game must include a 120Hz mode, often with reduced resolution or visual effects. Check its in-game settings after enabling 120Hz Output on the console.
Can VRR work through a soundbar or receiver?
Only if every link supports 4K/120Hz and VRR pass-through. Connecting the PS5 directly to the display is the quickest diagnostic test.
Is a new HDMI cable needed?
The supplied PS5 cable supports the required high-bandwidth modes. Replace it only when Video Output Information shows a limitation or the signal drops out.
Buy for the mode that will actually be used
- Test a supported 120Hz game before judging a display or replacing hardware.

A satisfying 4K/60 HDR display remains a strong PS5 screen and does not need replacing for ordinary play. HDMI 2.1 becomes worthwhile when supported 120fps modes or PS5 VRR are genuine priorities.
